It’s been almost TWO months back in the salon and I wanted to say a gigantic THANK YOU to every one one of my guests for coming in and making me feel “normal” again!❤️ It’s been truly wonderful to reconnect with familiar faces (masked, of course!) and also meet some new ones. I know some things have changed in the salon and in your service, but my care and dedication to you has not ❤️ Thank you again for the continued positivity and support!

Much love + stay well,
Xoxo

Aveda Happy PRIDE MONTH!🌈❤️

Pride never stops + I will never stop advocating and creative a safe place for everyone in my chair ❤️ My LGBTQIA+ friends and family have taught me nothing but love my entire life, and it’s my honor to celebrate alongside you ❤️ Our community of LGBTQIA+ represents a diverse group of stunningly passionate people. You’ve taught us the true meaning of creativity and beyond. From makeup maestros to hair masters, your understanding of beauty as expression is pure genius, and we couldn’t be more proud.
Aveda Beyond thrilled to be a part of a company that honors our Mother and works with her gifts ❤️🌞 Happy Summer everyone! Today’s the Summer Solstice, aka the official kick-off to summer. ☀️
And to celebrate the longest day of sunlight, we’re proud to announce our new solar array installation at Aveda HQ. Since our HQ is situated on a National Wildlife Federation-Certified habitat, we designed the array to protect native insects and animals, with shrubs and trees for food and shelter.

What exactly is our solar array and how does it work?
☀️The array is made up of 2,931 solar panels on a 3.65 acre field
☀️It’s estimated to generate 1.5 million kWh (kilowatt hours) to the Aveda building
☀️This will power up to 50% of our manufacturing facility’s annual energy demands
Tomorrow is my first day back to the salon. Back to work. But the work I’ve been doing out of the salon will never cease to be a priority in my life. I recognize that it is a privilege to be able to take the time to educate myself, play 26 years of catch-up, and expand my consciousness — meanwhile fellow Black brothers & sisters are still being killed, still being systemically oppressed, still trying to just live in America without fear. While I’m still learning what differences I can make, I know this is the right path to take to keep demanding change in our society. The beauty industry has so much work to do, and I’m hopeful for the change that is to come. The sincerest THANK YOU to authors Ayana D. Byrd and @myamericanmeltingpot , and to @reneesrh for hosting a book club to educate + reflect on the history and present day experiences of wearing Black hair in America. It is such a privilege to listen and be educated by Black women, because I know it is not their responsibility to get me caught up. I truly appreciate the space created for this discussion and respect your energy 🖤 I am beyond ready to start this path tomorrow with y’all at 8pm EST on AvedaPurePro (TELL YOUR FELLOW STYLISTS). I am so ashamed and sorry that it took me this long to truly wake up and take action. I am here now, and I’m never leaving 🖤#Blacklivesmatter #hairstory #avedapurepro
Thinking about your next appointment, or already have one in the books? Here is what to expect during your next (most likely several) visits!

There will always be a place for LOVE in my chair (and heart)
.
I’ve spent the past several days reflecting, listening, educating myself, having difficult conversations in hopes to educate others, signing petitions, donating, uplifting, standing, walking, embracing... change is happening, folks. It’s been a long time coming — too damn long. But if we keep doing the good work, the hard work, and keep evolving ourselves, this change WILL come.
.
One thing that will never change, however, is my love for all life, and dedication to educating myself on how I can do better. And how to take action with my privilege so those around me can do better as well. I’ve learned that simply not being racist is never enough, and have committed to life long learning + listening. I’ve learned that being an ally is not just being loving and accepting of — it’s actively listening, supporting and uplifting cultures and lifestyles.
.
In addition to educating myself in a personal sense, I have committed to educating myself in a professional sense. While I have always held textured hair and black hair close to my heart, I’ve struggled in my professional quest for that knowledge. It was not offered at my beauty school, and while I watched and learned from my black classmates, I understood it was not their responsibility to educate me. I have since gone out on my own to further educate myself, but it’s still not enough. We need black educators (PLURAL), we need black hair in our school’s curriculums, we need diversity in all salons. I am committed to advocating for this change until it happens. Beauty is diversity, and I won’t stop until we see that diversity on every level.
.
I’ve been hesitant to speak out from my perspective because it’s not about me, it’s about our beautiful, smart, strong brothers and sisters. But I did want to use my privilege and platform to stand in solidarity. And while I will never have their perspective, I’ve realized I can and will always listen, uplift, share and support their voices, because theirs are the ones that matter 🖤

BLACK LIVES MATTER.
BLACK DREAMS MATTER.
BLACK CULTURE MATTERS.
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
They always have, and they always will 🖤

“The perfect summer braid doesn’t exis.....”

I love the effortless texture of a fishtail braid! This braid loves being messy (freeing yourself of worry when you’re out having fun) + beautifully displays your summer highlights (whether you got them in the salon or from the sun!) Check out my braid tutorial on how to create your own 💚
Braiding Starter Pack We took F O U R of the most popular braids right now and created a tutorial for y’all! In this video you will learn the basic techniques + best practices on how to create beautiful braids. While creating a braid tutorial for you all, I was inspired to push the simple invisible (or “french”) braid a bit further than we are used to seeing it done to give a more edgy look 👀 I LOVE the way the small braids add texture while the large braid on top + the flirty ponytail add softness — what do you think?
Curls gone w i l d ✌️🌼

I am loving the look of this pin curl set after a few days or gravity doing its thing, and a couple brush outs with a natural bristle brush. Pro Tip: when using high quality, professional products like @aveda beCurly™️ Curl Enhancer + Phomollient™️ and the proper technique, your set will last for DAYS and still maintain a light, bouncy feel ✨ Check out my IGTV “Not Your Grandma’s Pin Curl Set” tutorial you see exactly how to achieve this long-lasting look!
Now more than ever, we need to care for each other above all else. If this pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that people are the heart + soul of our society — not corporations or money. Thank you to all the incredible #essentialworkers keeping us safe + fed. Thank you to all the businesses taking proper care of their employees + doing their best to keep them as safe as possible. Thank to all the folks volunteering to save lives or feed the hungry during this difficult time. While I deeply miss being behind the chair taking care of my beautiful guests, I am not blind to the fact that what I do is not life sustaining (please check your privilege if you feel that it is). I will continue to be respectful of the many people making the tough choices to keep as many people safe + alive as possible. Money is replaceable; your mother, father, sibling, friend, local business owner, coworker, employee, fellow human beings, are not. I can not wait to see you all in the salon, grab a cup of coffee with you, take a hike together or attend a live music event — but until then, please take care of one another. Be kind, be empathetic, be loving, and be s a f e out there 🤍

This shape was inspired by a class I took with the brilliant @ricardodinis ✂️ As much as I loved every second of class, I could not wait to get out of my chair + get behind my mannequin! Curls, coils + kinks hold such a special place in my heart — and during class Ricardo mentioned that sometimes the hardest part of textured hair is having your guest want to leave the salon curly. That really stuck with me, because SO many of my guests have beautiful curls but are always fighting to straighten them out. I wanted to create a look that hopefully evokes a sense of pride + confidence in wearing textured hair naturally. We are moving towards a time where more + more people are choosing to embrace their natural hair — I want you to know that I’ll be ready to help guide you into what that looks like for you + your magnificent crown 👑 I hope you enjoy the look as much as I enjoyed creating it ❤️

prep: applied @aveda dry remedy™️ conditioner to entire head then gently combed through with wide tooth comb, rinsed well with cool water
cut: applied nutriplenish™️ oil + leave in before cutting to help hair retain moisture during cut
style: becurly™️ curl enhancer + phomollient™️ evenly through hair, diffuse on low speed low heat, once dry I used my hands to customize curls ➿
Minimalist Makeup Tutorial My makeup aesthetic is soft, natural + g l o w y, and that’s just what my guests keep coming to me for! ✨ This tutorial is all about using as little product as possible to enhance our natural beauty, using all @aveda products! I hope this tutorial opens your mind a bit to start experimenting with your makeup + trying out of the box ideas! I would love to see what you all come up with ❤️

Nature is something that deeply inspires me and feeds my soul every single day. It inspired me to create my own hashtag, #hairdressingisinmynature (love a good pun). I am grateful to work for a company like @aveda that cares so much for the world we live in 🌎 (so much so that it’s in our mission statement!) From all the colors in the sky to all the textures found growing up from the dirt, there is so much beauty our planet has to offer 💚🌎🌱 Even when I’m not creating, nature gives me a place to find serenity and ground myself, which is why I chose to live next to a stunning state park — I just can’t get enough!

What inspires you, or gives you a sense of calm in our busy world?
Gratitude is a practice I’ve incorporated into my every day life. I wake up every morning, grab a tall glass of water + reflect on all there is to be grateful for, big or small. Gratitude is something that has seen me through very difficult times, similar to what we are all growing through right now. Stressful times make it easy to lose our sense of control + overlook the beautiful things that make life worth living.

It’s been exactly 2 months today that I have been social distancing in my home + so much has changed — but I have never let go of my gratitude. I’m grateful for having a safe place to call home, for being able to share a home with my fiancé, for having the means to create a beautiful space that gives us joy, for being able to purchase + cook fresh food together, for all the incredible minds at @aveda for creating inspiring education to watch every day, for my guests that have reached out and kept in touch (I miss you all dearly), for our extensive + eclectic record collection that keeps my brain moving (my body too), for the state park next door that remains open for us to hike daily, for @zoom calls + FaceTime with family and friends, for all the vegan restaurants remaining open for carry-out, for my houseplants that bring nature indoors when the weather isn’t so nice, for @dudewithsign for inspiring these photos, for @zakpaulhowell for shooting + editing these photos (and my tutorials), and of course for my friend-equins from @pivotpoint and @hairart that are a patient and quiet medium for me to keep creating from home until it is safe for us to return to @douglasjsalon .

Setting hair is making a comeback - now more than ever. Our busy lives constantly have us on the go, which leaves little to no time to style our hair. What’s a gal to do? 🤷‍♀️ Set it + forget it (the stress of styling, that is)! With a good set + the right products, you can have yourself a style that will last as long as you want it to — a day, two, three, seven... the possibilities are endless! This is the finished look of a #pincurlset using @aveda Curl Enhancer + Phomollient 🌱 Want to see how I did it? Check back with my page tomorrow for a complete tutorial!

Happy Hairstylist Appreciation Day to my very first hairdresser, my Grandma ❤️

Much of my sister and I’s childhood was her cutting, styling and playing with our hair. Those are some of my favorite memories with her.

As she got older, my Grandmother’s friend Miss Josie would come to my grandparent’s apartment and style my grandmother’s hair for her. I remember being so interested in all the tools, rollers, shears and products Miss Josie would pull out of her pink suitcase! I was also very excited when Miss Josie would come, because I knew her visit would make my Grandma feel better ❤️ Hairdressing is such a powerful craft.

I wish Grandma could have seen me grow up to be the stylist I am today, but I trust her spirit is somewhere watching me, feeling proud of the granddaughter she inspired ❤️
